The album is a suite which was originally commissioned by Getz from composer and arranger Eddie Sauter. Widely regarded as a high point for both men's careers, Getz later described Focus as his favorite among his own records. The pair would next collaborate on their soundtrack to the 1965 film Mickey One. Meaning that Stan has no foil to complement or compete against. He is allowed to float around (which he admittedly does to great effect) without the challenge of another soloist to bring out the best in his playing. 'Focus' is a very good album but I'm not sure it's really representative of Stan as an artist. By 1961 when "Focus" was recorded, Stan Getz was a rising jazz star.
